![]() ![]() ![]() Choose File > Export to > Microsoft Word > Word Document. It’s not an exciting request □ but if an InDesign file needs to be converted to Word, there is a shortcut. That limits the design a bit, but we are big believers in “form follows function”. If the client has to edit frequently, we determine before we start the design that Word or PowerPoint might be the best tools. Understanding how the files will be used is an important driver for the software tools we recommend. When we start a new project, we identify if clients will need to be able to edit the documents on an ongoing basis. So InDesign and Illustrator files provide a challenge for them and they request to use Word or export InDesign to Word so they can edit the files on their own. Our clients often need to edit content in the design document for a variety of reasons, but they don’t have access to the software and don’t know how to use it. These programs are created for professional designers and provide the tools needed for layout and design. ![]() If you have the possibility to use tools that already implemented such an automation, I personally would look into that. The request for converting InDesign to Word is most likely something a designer comes across at some point.ĭesigning brochures, annual reports, info sheets, posters, and print materials of any kind, the software programs designers use are Adobe Indesign and Illustrator. I don't know what the parameters of your projects are, but I do know it's not trivial to get such a process running stable and performant. Such as making sure the InDesign file you are opening is checked for missing links and fonts and that for example images in the InDesign file are updated before you output to PDF. In the former case I believe scripts are being pushed to InDesign Server in the latter case MadeToPrint uses an InDesign Server plug-in.īesides how to launch and communicate with InDesign Server there are a number of other things you might already be aware of. I know of two commercial products that have such an implementation: Enfocus Switch (and axaio MadeToPrint (- I'm affiliated with this company). That is why most of the approaches you'll find will launch InDesign Server, leave it running and then do the actual communication through something like SOAP or through an InDesign Server plug-in. Keep in mind that InDesign Server can take a while to load completely (to state it mildly) and that launching it for every PDF might very well not live up to your performance expectations. The most important caution probably is performance if you need to do this with InDesign Server, likely you want to convert more than just one PDF. The link mentions in his comment should indeed be a good starting point, but caution is probably in order. ![]()
